Training Philosophy
Is your cat scratching up your carpet? Do they leap over and nip your leg? Beyond the Dog Tampa Bay specializes in teaching Cat Obedience and Manners through personalized training programs that meet your cat’s unique challenges. Our trainers use a proprietary combination of classical and operant conditioning with a function-based approach to all behavior modification. With over 20 years of experience training cat obedience and manners, we are uniquely qualified to empower cat owners to effectively communicate with their cats and foster a deeper understanding of their behavior.
With our in-home and virtual kitten training, you’ll learn everything you need to raise a well-behaved, happy, social kitten. Just like puppies, kittens can be taught obedience and manners training. Our training programs can help meet your goals, including handling your kitten properly, attending stress-free veterinary visits, introducing your kitten to other pets, and more.

Our 16-hour Cat Obedience and Manners Training Program is designed to modify your cat’s behavior to ensure they become a happy and well-mannered cat. Our in-home training programs will focus on obedience and manners, including but not limited to:
– Eliminating biting
– Minimizing constant meowing
– Reducing scratching
– Teaching comfortable leash walking
– Positively introducing a cat carrier to make your cat comfortable.
Beyond the Dog has taught cat obedience and manner training for over 20 years. Our team will provide science-based training to achieve long-term success in modifying your cat’s behavior. Our science-based training programs use evidence-based research, like a study by Seksel (2008), to provide the most effective training methods. These training methods ensure our approach is both practical and ethical. According to Dr. Echterling-Savage, “It is exciting to see a change in behavior with kittens, just like we do with puppies. Pet parents are often amazed that so much training can be done with a kitten.”
Our 16-hour Obedience and Manners Training Program includes one-on-one sessions with your dedicated behavior consultant, Sean Savage. These sessions occur at home or in your neighborhood and cover many behaviors, including minimizing constant meowing, eliminating biting, and teaching your cat to walk on a leash for neighborhood strolls.
Each session is designed to maximize training effectiveness, with the final session of each week dedicated to training and supporting you. During this personalized session, Sean will provide guidance on reinforcing the skills your cat has learned, ensuring a seamless transition to home life.
Dr. Echterling-Savage will meet with you through two hours of private virtual consultations to teach your cat high-level obedience and manners. This program includes virtual consultations, a personalized training plan, and ongoing support for long-term success.
Dr. Echterling-Savage is one of the few Board Certified Behavior Analysts specializing in Applied Animal Behavior and one of only about 50 Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists (CAABs) nationwide. She brings extensive knowledge to each session, backed by a doctorate in the field, published research on canine behavior modification, and 25 years of hands-on training. Dr. Echterling-Savage offers expert guidance to help your cat develop high-level obedience and manners.
During the virtual consultations, Dr. Echterling-Savage will discuss your cat’s behavioral history and your training goals, allowing her to develop a personalized training program tailored to your needs. After your initial consultation, she will troubleshoot specific behavior scenarios and offer ongoing guidance throughout your cat’s training process.
Our Cat Manners and Obedience Behavior Modification Package is priced at $750, which includes two hours of virtual consultations and support.
