Spring is arguably the best season in Kansas City. It brings warm weather that is not too hot or cold, Virginia bluebells blooming along Bluebell Park, and new trails to explore with your dog. Unfortunately, spring also brings allergies, mud, and insects. So, what do you need to prepare your pup for the spring season? We’ve listed our spring essentials to enjoy the best parts of the season.
- Nail clippers: Spring means rain, and rain means mud. Keeping your dog’s paws tidy is the best way to prevent mud from clumping around your dog’s nails and paw fur. If you do the grooming yourself, we recommend Costal’s pet clippers or Dremel’s nail grinder.
- Fur trimmers: During the rainy season, it’s not enough to keep nails short. You should also keep your dog’s paw fur tidy. Long paw hair will keep mud on your dog’s paws long after they have come back inside. Plus, using an electric blade is much easier and safer than most people think. There are many painless blades that are very effective at shaving off unwanted fur. We like Oneisall’s dog clippers, which are quiet and easy to use.
- Allergy medication and wipes: Allergy medication is a must for people and dogs who suffer from Spring allergies. It is time to renew your dog’s prescription or make a trip to the pharmacy for some Claritin. If you want to keep the pollen in your home to a minimum, invest in dog-friendly wipes. This will keep the dust and dirt from finding its way to your furniture.
- Travel water bottle: For all the outdoor adventures you and your dog can have in the Spring, don’t forget to bring your dog’s water with you. Travel water bottles, like PupFlask or Lesotc Water Bottle, are a great way to keep your dog hydrated on the go.
- Sunscreen: Sun protection is essential to you and your dog. Although your dog is mostly covered by fur, there are sensitive areas that you want to keep protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Dogs with thin, light fur, like bull terriers, boxers, and greyhounds, are particularly susceptible to sunburn. At a minimum, you’ll want to put sunscreen on the top of your dog’s nose, plus any additional areas where the fur coverage is very light. We recommend the sun balm from My Dog Nose It.
- Floral bandana or Spring rain coat: For those that like to shop, a change in season can mean a change in wardrobe. A new floral bandana can be the perfect addition to a bluebonnet family photoshoot. Or maybe your dog needs a jacket for the rain. Check out these adorable jackets from Lucy & Co. So these fashions may not be spring essentials… but they sure would be darn cute!
