Hello, Summer in Kansas City! One of our favorite things about this time of year is the multitude of dog-friendly activities. To help you and your pup enjoy this summer and stay safe in the heat we’ve rounded up our top summer essentials.
Summer Essentials Checklist
Water bottle or bowl
The number one essential is water! Whether you are in your yard or out and about with your pup, make sure you have a water bottle or access to a water bowl. We recommend The PupFlask Large Dog Water Bottle and this collapsible dog bowl as great portable options!
Shoes or paw wax
When you think of dog shoes, typically snow/ice booties in the winter come to mind but dog shoes or wax are a great way to help protect your dog’s paws from the hot pavement too. Asphalt, concrete, wood, and sand can get hot quickly in the sun. An easy way to check the surface temperature is to place your hand on the ground for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Try out these Breathable Dog Booties or Paw wax so you and your pup can still enjoy a leisurely summer walk.
Sunscreen
Just like us, dogs are susceptible to sunburn. If your dog will be exposed to the sun we recommend applying a dog-safe sunscreen. For skin, nose, and ear protection, we recommend this Non-Toxic EBPP Dog Sunscreen. If your dog has a double coat, we recommend against shaving their coat. Instead, keeping long-coated dogs’ hair trimmed throughout the summer can help keep them cooler. The layers in a dog’s coat help protect them from overheating and from sunburn. If you’re looking for a reputable groomer check out our blog “Highly Reviewed Groomers in Kansas City.”
Items to help your dog stay cool
- Kuranda Bed – Allowing air to flow underneath, this elevated dog bed is a great option to help keep your cool inside or outside.
- Cooling pad – This pressure-activated gel pad begins cooling when your dog steps on it. The patented formula recharges after 15 to 20 minutes of inactivity, just make sure you don’t leave in direct sunlight. No water, electricity, or refrigeration is necessary.
